Before the wife begins her tale, she informs the audience about her life and personal experience on marriage, in a lengthy prologue. The Wife of Bath initiates her prologue by declaring that she has had five husbands, giving her enough experience to make her an expert on marriage. Numerous people have criticized her for having had many husbands, but she does not see anything immoral about it. Although some of their poems discuss themes of depressing nature, on a wider scale both Blake and Donne write poetry which is not only uplifting but also inspiring and extremely worthwhile to read.    The two main themes covered by these two writers are love and death. The poems which use love as the main theme inspire the reader and offer hope that true love exists and is not a fragment of their imagination. The feelings that are discussed in these poems are feelings that all people can experience but are difficult to describe and put into words. This is what makes the poetry so worthwhile to read, to see how the feelings that relate to love are expressed and how they are shown with images and other writing styles.    A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning by John Donne was written to express his feelings for his lover. The poem talks about the feelings of love being so intense that nothing will ever dull the bond between the two souls. A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning is uplifting because Donne talks of a â€Å"love so refined that ourselves know not what it is,† in other words a love so perfect it cannot be explained. This is what makes the poem because Donne has said the love cannot be explained but then he goes on to explain what the two people are feeling and it is done in a way that can never be reproduced or attempted by other poets. This poem is as perfect as the love it describes. Anne Bishop bases her story, â€Å"Match Girl, off of Hans Christian Andersen’s â€Å"Little Match Girl†, but she adds a disturbing twist. Bishop uses so much torture and violence that as a reader you want no more. â€Å"Little Match Girl† was a story based on an innocent little girl having to face the cold heart of society. On the other hand, â€Å"Match Girl† was a story based on a young girl that has to face a disgusting and cruel world. The misery and cruelty that Bishop adds to her story is too much for this story to gain credibility. The story starts off with Phoenix already having to suffer from her owner’s cruelty. Just like the little girl in Andersen’s story Phoenix is suffering from cold and torn boots, but in Bishop’s story we get to meet her owners. In this tale we have characters that we can hate. Thanks to all of the characters that Bishop’s uses we are able to get a background story, a setting, and are able to have other feelings besides sadness. To start off with her owners were too cruel. Da had no voice throughout the story and the only action he had that was seen was when he hit Moll. Moll is a cold-hearted woman that treats Phoenix badly probably because she is also living a miserable life. She is forced to live in a man’s world. The men in her life control her and at the first chance she gets to show power and control she takes it. At first it seems like she is the only cruel character but that title is removed once we meet the rest of the characters. Moll and Da’s son does not fall too far from the tree. William is a disgusting creature that should have never been given life. He is absolutely good for nothing and does nothing besides shove his penis into innocent and defenseless Phoenix. He gets away with so much and no one says or does anything, not even Phoenix. But William is only a fraction of all the disgusting males in this story. The worst scene in this story is the one when all the men take a turn on raping Phoenix. She has a spoon that is violently hurting her mouth, meanwhile she has men violently rape her one right after the other. These men are completely heartless and time and again Bishop includes scenes of other women being punished by the men when they don’t do what they are told. Bishop only shows the men in the story as being drunk, violent, and horny. It’s as if she is trying to make a greater argument besides the cruel society that Phoenix lives in. All the men in this story are completely useless and do not have any actions besides violence and sex. This violence and sex is what leads critics to say that the cruelty takes credibility away. It is just too much for one girl to stand. There is too much misery for one story too hold. Anne Bishop said, â€Å"While I embellished or modified details to fit the fictional place, I didn’t make up the instruments of torture. They all existed† (Pg 247). I seem to disagree with Bishop. These â€Å"modified details† did not fit this fictional place. It was too much torture for one story, for one specific character to endure. Although Phoenix saw other women being hurt in different ways, she still had to endure watching them suffer. Phoenix when through too much and although in real life humans also have to endure torture and cruelty, I don’t believe anyone will ever go through all that Phoenix went through. I understand that the methods of torture used are real and were used; I just wish Bishop had cut done a bit on all the horrible things that happened to Phoenix. Phoenix didn’t deserve anything that happened to her, but she continued to be kicked around in more misery until the end. This story was really hard to read and accept. The imm ense cruelty took away from the credibility of the tale.

Obsessed with Kathryn, ever since their parents got married he will stop at nothing to have her. He needs her, craves her. Accompanied by her lesser stepsibling Sebastian, they make an apocalyptic alliance playing a dangerous game of sex and betrayal with Ceciles life. Although cruel, ruthless and cunning Sebastian finds himself falling for the smart, beautiful, clever Annette as he stumbles across powerful emotions and a genuine connection with her. Petrified of losing his reputation as a lathario he calls the wager off and tells Annette everything, much to the dismay and envy of Kathryn. Caught up in jealousy Kathryn decides to put an end to the blossoming romance; if she cant have him no one can, thus the games begin. Whats right with it? Any film featuring Sarah Michelle Gellar as a dangerous, evil, seductive sex icon is a step in the right direction. Her electric performance as the domineering, vindictive villain is convincing although the coyly raised eyebrow and whimsical sarcasm become slightly predictable and repetitive as the film develops. Yet overall Gellar sinks her fangs into the Kathryn Merteuil role well and rises to the challenge with a snipers rifle for a tongue. Shockingly provocative and in complete contrast to the American girl next door she plays in her present teen drama Buffy, Gellar will give audiences worldwide a shock. Returning once again to British screens, Reese Witherspoon gives another convincing performance as our all-round favourite American Sweetheart. Witherspoon oozes with charm and warmth, convincing the audience of Annettes innocence. Playing the victim-in-love roles come naturally to Witherspoon making her performance seem believable and confident. On the other hand this is casting at its safest; Witherspoon does what she can with a frankly limited script. On top form though was relative newcomer ultra-slick Ryan Phillippe. Phillippe is even more treacherous than he is attractive, creating an edgy tension as soon as he appears on screen. As the film progresses you start to sympathise with his character despite the fact that at times his crudity is more than vulgar, his intensity makes him memorising to watch. Sparks fly between Witherspoon and Phillippe as they generate great chemistry creating a genuinely interesting relationship on-screen. Adapted from the 1982 novel Les Liaisons Dangereuse by Choderlos de Laclos Cruel Intentions is not the first successful adaptation to come out the Hollywood archives. Over 30s may remember the young Uma Thurman playing virginal Cecile in the 1990s film alongside Glenn Close, John Malkovich and Michelle Pfeiffer. Cruel Intentions lacks the darkness of the original film, Dangerous Liaisons, but targets a younger audience. Rather than using middle-aged aristocrats Roger Kumble uses fresh, young teenag ers to express the effects of tearing each other apart and finding love. Kumbles stylish direction depicts the twisted lives of the rich stepsiblings, skilfully presenting the cruel and heartless ways they manipulate their targets and deceive others around them. Cruel Intentions is the sort of intelligent filmmaking that hasnt been seen for a long time. Roger Kumble realises that the plot alone is strong enough allowing Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe to achieve their best work to date. It would have been easier to turn the material into a period drama rather than a film but fortunately Kumble doesnt opt for the easy approach and we get a compelling and emotionally exhausting war of the sexes that rarely flags as it races for the inevitable tragic conclusion. Whats Wrong With It? I dont want to overstate how good Cruel Intentions is, but as an adaptation of Dangerous Liaisons it stands out from the rest showing the characters in a more sensitive light. Lacking the much-loved black comedy there are few laughing opportunities throughout the second half of the film. Also, we never get to meet the stepsiblings parents but we do know that Sebastians father is diddling the Vietnamese maid.

February Action creative writing Essay So, after my great holidays, back to reality. In this case, it meant moving flats. I moved out of my friends flat and in with two Mexican siblings, girl (spoilt acting student) and boy (pain in the ass lawyer student). (The statements in this part are highly influenced by later experiences with the two people, I got along with them and their family fine. ) And when I moved I found the flat under water. So the first thing I did was spend hours soaking towels. Apart from that the two were always nice to me, the guy was almost never there and the girl went home on weekends, so I had the place to myself a lot, which was great. The flat was on the ground floor, so despite great sunny weather outside, I lived in freezing conditions. But it was well-located for work and social life. My room consisted of a bed and a built in cupboard (already provided) and a very useful box (which I found on the street and stayed with me until I moved out). I started working too giving English classes in the Bank of Mexico, some 20 hours a week, all 1-1 classes with mostly enjoyable students. As I had already found a football team, it meant I had found friends who took me out, to the cinema and every sunday the PUMAS (one of the local teams) game was a must. I was introduced to the stadium, the anthem (!!!! ) and the during match entertainment (beer and crisps) and the after match entertainment (more beer, discussion of game, and strange activities like having electric shocks outside of the stadium). Although not completely my description of a great time, it was good fun nevertheless. I otherwise spent quite lazy weekends, enjoying the company of my friend Itziar and playing football. At the end of February, the football girls had a huge party, which was great great fun, a lovely, welcoming group of girls who know how to party. There I became better friends with a lot of them, which was very nice. The party was full of good food, dancing, dancing and dancing and when it ended, we decided to go to a friends house to continue the party, but we all ended up falling asleep there. So some good weekend action. I was invited by the family of my flatmates to Cuernavaca, which is the getaway for inhabitants of the big City. (btw, if New York City is the Big Apple, Mexico City must be something like the Big Papaya) I went out on the Saturday morning by bus and then spent quite a relaxed time in the house, which is quite a bit outside of the city center. We had a lovely meal and then they took me into the city center, where they, interestingly enough, put me on the tourist bus and I went around on that. Pity really, because the main square had some really interesting and fun dancing and singing going on, surrounded by people selling handcrafts and other oddities. So the bus ride was quite amusing, lots of historically interesting information that I forget while the guide is finishing the sentence. Cuernavaca is a nice city and the bus also took us on a walk through some park/ravine, which was also umm nice. Then in the evening I met the family to have supper at a very good Italian restaurant before we headed back to their house, where I fell right to sleep (tired from the party, obviously). Sunday just meant a long sleep, another nice meal and then the return journey back to the city. So I got a look at what Cuernavaca was like, which was enjoyable. Next time, Ill just go by myself to see more of the place instead of seeing it wizzing by from the Touribus.
